Need help with IRS CP11

This means the IRS found a discrepancy that caused your refund to be reduced or that you now owe tax due.   No one in this forum can see your tax return, and TT does not get any information when you get a letter from the IRS.   But.....lots of people have made mistakes this year with the child tax credit or the recovery rebate credit, so that is a good starting point for you to see if that is the problem and if you agree with the change made by the IRS.

TurboTax does not get any information from the IRS after you file your tax return, so no one at TT knows why your refund was less or changed to tax due.

You have not mentioned any specific amounts.  Sometimes we can make an educated guess as to the reason for your reduced refund if you mention specific amounts--for example if your refund was short by $1400 per person---it is likely to be a mix up regarding the 3rd EIP payment.    If you received the 3rd stimulus check of $1400 per person in 2021 then you got letter 6475 from the IRS about it.   You needed to enter the amount you received.   If you already received that money then line 30 on your Form 1040 should have been blank.

  If it is short by $1800 or  $1500 or  a multiple of that amount  ---   maybe a mixup regarding the advance child tax credit payments. If you received monthly child tax credit payments of $250 or $300 per month between July and December of 2021, then you got letter 6419 from the IRS, and you were required to enter the amount of the advance payments.   Only the remaining amount of the CTC should have been on line 28 of your Form 1040.

The IRS knows how much they sent to you for the 3rd stimulus check and they know how much they sent for advance child tax credit payments.   If you answered something incorrectly on your tax return then the IRS made a correction that resulted in a reduced refund for you.

The IRS will send you a letter that explains why your refund was reduced.   Meanwhile it might help you to check your online IRS account.

If you need to trace a payment that the IRS says has been issued to you, mail or fax a completed IRS Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.

I received a letter stating I owe $850.23, I only received 2 stimulus checks and I have never had to pay the IRS. I was actually going to receive around $600 back from my tax return. In total I believe I owe $1268 but my income tax was $420 which was subtracted from the $1268 and it ends up being $850.23. I’m sure it’s a mistake but I’m not sure how to fix it.

I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE IRS/STATE

TurboTax does not receive any information from the IRS or your state after your return was filed, so no one at TurboTax knows about a letter you received from the IRS or the state.

(what the letters from the IRS mean)

AUDIT SUPPORT

TurboTax has a special phone number for help with IRS/state tax letters, which will be easier than going through regular Customer Support.   At the page below, click on the blue button that says "Get Help from TurboTax Support".  Then it will ask you what tax year is your letter.  Then it will ask you what the letter concerns. Then it will show you the phone number during posted business hours.

@emilagros18

1) what is on Line 30 of your tax return.

2) while you state you only received 2 stimulus checks, please go back and look at your March - May. 2021 bank account statements to see whether there is a $1400 deposit,

post back and I can explain what occured or how to resolve.

It says $1,400 on line 30, and I remembered incorrectly because I actually did receive the $1,400. I apologize for the mix up.

Need help with IRS CP11

@emilagros18 - so no amendment required; the IRS has already fixed the problem!  Be sure to pay what is owed as soon as possible, otherwise, the interest clock will continue to grow.

I was able to look at all of my bank statements because on my phone I was only able to see up to a certain point. This is what I received from the IRS : 01/04/21- $600, 03/17/21-$1,400, and 05/25/21- $390.09. Would that change anything?

Need help with IRS CP11

@emilagros18 - no - it won't change anything

3/17/21 - that is your stimulus

5/29/21 - is that your 2020 refund???
