Stimulus payments frequently asked questions
This did not help. Earlier on the message from the IRS was saying that I was eligible for my stimulus and that it would be deposited in my account with the last 4 digits of my bank account. NOW, the message has changed to say it is going to be MAILED on 3/26/21. They just sent my tax refund last week which was deposited in my account. I am confused as to why it was switched to now being mailed. Of course, with the challenges of the postal service, I am nervous about having this mailed, especially when they have my accurate account information. This has happened to other people that I know and I am trying to figure out why it's been changed from direct deposit to mail, if they have the correct information.
We do not know whether the IRS will refer to 2019 tax information or 2020 tax information to issue your third stimulus payment.
This TurboTax Help states:
Do I need to do anything to get my stimulus check?
You don’t need to do anything to get your stimulus check. The IRS will determine eligibility based on your last tax return (either 2019 or 2020) and will likely send your payment to the bank account where your tax refund was deposited.
The IRS says that the only way to update your mailing address and banking information is by filing your 2020 Federal 1040 tax return. The IRS is making no portal available.

There may not be a clear answer to my question and that is ok. My bank account information has not changed in the last 4 years. All of my tax returns in the last 4 years has been deposited into the same bank account. My status from the IRS before this Friday, indicated that the stimulus would be sent to my bank account, displaying the last 4 digits of my account. ON FRIDAY, the message switched to "it will be mailed on 3/26/21". My question is why the switch when they had the correct information all along. I have not had ANY issues in the last 4 years with receiving my refund and/or stimulus to my account. Before Friday, everything was set up for it to be direct deposited. NOW - it says it will be mailed. AND - that's not just my story - there are others who had the same thing happen to them. So, I was just trying to see if there was a standard reason why in mid-process they would change our method of receiving the stimulus from direct deposit to mail, if they have the correct bank account information and for years has been sending it to the correct account. Like I said, there may not be a clear answer to my question, and that's fine. I was just curious and a little concern that something did not transfer correctly with my information.
@dmatth I know this is not a satisfactory answer but it is what the IRS says for why they are mailing you a check and not a direct deposit for the third stimulus.

Your payment may have been sent by mail because the bank rejected the deposit. This could happen because the bank information was invalid or the bank account has been closed.
Note: You can’t change your bank information already on file with the IRS for your first or second Economic Impact Payment. Don’t call the IRS, our phone assistors won’t be able to change your bank information, either.
