Question

My amendment got rejected due to dependent differences even though I entered the dependent the same. All I was amending was a 1099-R I received after I filed.

I filed head of household but have my son listed as a dependent. My ex-wife and I alternate the tax deduction. But for some reason my son wasn't listed in the dependent section of the 1040, yet I was able to file Head of Household since he lived with me most of the year. It was the ex-wife's turn to claim the child tax credit.

The child tax credit has been revamped for this year only. It seems you both stated that the child lived with you over half the year. See What is the Child Tax Credit?

Thank you.

I have always had primary educational custody because he goes to school in my city. We just agreed to take turns claiming the child tax credit. I have always claimed him as a dependent as HOH, just not the tax credit.

Ultimately...all I was trying to do was amend my return for a 1099-R that came after I filed. Can I just mail the form in with the updated income and the check of what I owe?

Your only option will be to mail in the amended form. You can pay online at Payments | Internal Revenue Service. I do not recommend mailing the check with the return. You should use tracking to ensure your return arrives safely. It will take  months before they open and process it.
