Messed up on taxes

Hello,

I messed up on my taxes I marked something wrong which is now affecting my mom for filing saying she owes a large amount. I already received my tax refund but my mom hasn’t yet filed. What happens if I can’t amend my taxes till 03/25/21 and the filing period ends April 15th. She won’t be able to file on time if the IRS takes a while to process the Amend form correct?

What happened?   Did you say that you cannot be claimed as someone else's dependent?  And is your mom trying to e-file her own return that claims you as her dependent?   That is a common mistake made by young tax filers who do not understand the importance of answering that question in My Info correctly.

If your mom's return being rejected now?   If you said you could not be claimed and she is claiming you she cannot e-file this year at all.  She now has to print sign and mail her own return.  Even if you amend your return, the amended return will never "catch up" in the system to allow your mother to e-file.

Mom does not need to wait for you to amend.  It will not help her.   She has to file by mail.  It will take longer for her return to be processed by the IRS now.

When the 1040X is available at the end of March, that is when you can amend your own return.

Here is a link with information about answering the question in My Info when you can be claimed as someone else's dependent:

Hi well I had several W-2’s to file and I forgot to mark my son as to be claimed by my mother because she covers him for insurance but everything else I pay for and he lives with me. So now it’s showing she owes $2000
