Lost Federal Refund Check

Hi! I have been reading posts in this forum and I am terrified I will experience a similar situation.

I have not received my federal refund and after speaking to Turbo tax was informed there was a discrepancy with my checking account number therefore a paper check was sent out.

The paper check mailed on 2/28/2023 due to the error on my bank account. However the issue is that the paper check was sent to my old mailing address off my W-2.

I have called TPG bank several times to update my address and get a resolution on this and held for several hours, only to not receive any response back.

I am a single mom and am in desperate need of my tax return.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to best escalate this and get this resolved?

Lost Federal Refund Check

So---you entered incorrect banking information and your address changed?   And.....you were having your fees deducted from your federal refund so the third party bank is involved?    Oh my.  You have a problem that may not be quickly resolved.

First---if you have not changed your address with the IRS---do that now.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS

If you chose to have your fees deducted from your federal refund, but entered wrong or closed bank account information for your direct deposit, you are going to have an aggravating, frustrating situation.  Your refund will go back to the third party bank. The third party bank might issue and mail you a check, or they might send your refund back to the IRS and then you will have to wait for the IRS to mail you a check.

If the third party bank mails the check, it will come in a plain envelope via first class mail so make sure you open all mail and do not assume anything is junk mail without opening it.  While you are waiting, make sure that the address you entered on your tax return is correct, or your problem will be even worse.

When you choose “refund processing” your refund goes FIRST  from the IRS to to the third party bank.  Then the bank takes your fees out of your refund and sends the rest of the refund to you.

Santa Barbara Tax Products Group, LLC  (SBTPG) is the bank that handles the Refund Processing Service when you choose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your refund. This option also has an additional charge from the bank that processes the transaction.

You can contact them SBTPG, toll-free, at 1-877-908-7228 or go to their secure website www.sbtpg.com

Lost Federal Refund Check

Thank you so much for responding and the great tips!

I was able to speak with someone from the IRS and Santa Barbara Tax Products Group, LLC  (SBTPG) to get my address updated first this AM.

Santa Barbara Tax Products Group, LLC  (SBTPG) said that they will send my federal refund back to the IRS and to call again next week to get a "lead/tracking number" to give to the IRS. However when I spoke with the IRS, they said that usually is not the case and SBTPG should be able to reissue a new check now that they have an updated address.

I am a little concerned. I have read horror stories online about SBTPG.

Hoping the process will be smooth from here. SBTPG said I can expect to receive my federal refund in 6-8 weeks from now if not sooner.
