I just found out that my return that I filed in early April was rejected (I did not realize that my email wasn't functioning). My autistic adult son had misunderstood me and claimed himself, so I can't claim him (he filed first). I resubmitted not claiming him (big hit, but I can live with it), but it's April 27. Is there any way to avoid a fine? I had no idea there was an issue with my email, because my other email address were still filling my inbox.

All you can do is file the return late ... no way to undo that situation. If you have a refund it makes no difference.
Ugh. I figured. Already lost $1500 by misspeaking during what I thought was a casual conversation ("Hey, can you claim us this year?" "I dunno. Probably not, because you're 21, but I'll have to see when I do my taxes") not knowing that it was an active "doing taxes at the moment" question from a "kid" who makes less than 4k a year. But, hey, he's being proactive and I wasn't on my game. Expensive mistake.
It does not have to be an expensive mistake---just a mistake that will take longer. You can still claim him if he made less than $4300, but you cannot e-file. Your e-file will be rejected so you need to file by mail in order to claim your son. Print, sign and mail in your 2021 return.
Meanwhile after the IRS processes his return he will need to amend and change the way he answered the question in My Info as to whether he could be claimed as a dependent. And...if he gets the $1400 recovery rebate credit as part of his refund on that incorrect return he sent, he will have to pay it back.
Waiting for him to amend will not help you to e-file. Now that his SSN is in the system this year the only way you can claim him and file will be by mail.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
