I got an email today from [email address removed] saying
“We wanted to reach out with an important reminder that the Dec. 31, 2021 deadline for submitting half of your deferred taxes from last year is quickly approaching.
“Our records indicate that you took advantage of the 2020 CARES Act that allowed self-employed individuals and household employers to defer the payment of certain Social Security taxes over the next two years. “
but the thing is to my knowledge I didn’t defer my taxes and I’ve got no other emails about this and this is the only email I’ve ever gotten from this address.

It is legit, although it might not apply to you. Do you have self employment income? Check if you have Schedule 3 line 12e. The IRS has also been mailing letters to remind people to pay their half by Dec 31.
The deferred tax appears as a refundable credit on Schedule 3 line 12e, "Deferral for certain Schedule H or SE filers." It was subtracted from the tax you had to pay with your tax return. You have to pay half the deferred tax by December 31, 2021 (the end of this month), and the remainder by December 31, 2022.
Thank you for replying! I did work as an independent contractor for a few months last year and I checked schedule 3 line 12e and it said 98. I logged into the IRS make a payment portal and it said $0 is owed. Is the IRS make a payment portal where I’m supposed to pay it or is it somewhere else? Sorry for asking more questions! The $0 owed has me thrown off 😅
