IRS said Fraudulent Tax Filing Identified for first time tax filer

I received a identity verification letter after filing on Turbo Tax as a first time tax filer.

After verifying it successfully with ID.me, I continued back to www.idverify.gov to verify on IRS.

When AGI of 2020 was asked, I put in $0 since I'm the first time tax filer.

But IRS page then show up with

Fraudulent Tax Filing Identified

IRS records indicate that a return has been filed using your identity. Criminals attempt to file a fraudulent return and claim a tax refund under a stolen identity. The refund will not be issued and the IRS will ensure that steps are taken to protect your identity in the future.

For more information:

  • Visit the Taxpayer Guide to Identity Theft and Review Identity Protection on the IRS website, OR
  • Call the Identity Theft Protection Specialized Unit at [phone number removed] to speak with a customer service representative.
  • If you were planning to file a tax return this tax season, you will not be able to file electronically and will need to mail your paper return by April 18, 2022. To find where to file your return, go to Where To File Paper Tax Returns.
  • If you don't already have an IP PIN, you may get an IP PIN as a proactive step to protect yourself from tax-related identity theft. An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number that prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. The IP PIN is known only to you and the IRS. It helps us verify your identity when you file your electronic or paper tax return.

You would need to contact the IRS directly for more information regarding the letter  you received from the IRS addressing the issue of the suspicion of fraud.
