IRS rejection

My return was rejected by both the IRS and State because someone else claimed one of my dependents. I am aware now, that i must refile by mail. My question is, do i send in proof for my dependent along with my return? Or do i wait for the IRS to reject the return again and request proof? I am prepared to send school records, proof of residency and court orders as my proof. I just don't know if i wait for them to be requested.

No, you do not send in any sort of "proof" now.   Wait until you receive a letter from the IRS---it might take a year---and then you will provide the evidence that the child lived with you and is your qualified dependent.

Just mail your tax return that claims your child let the IRS process the return.   Mailed returns take longer so expect a wait.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
