IND-517-02 - The second dependent.

We got the IND-517-02 rejection code.

I'm trying to confirm that that means it's the second dependent listed on our return. When we first got it, I assumed it was my son who recently filed his taxes incorrectly indicating that no one else can claim him as a dependent.

However, if, as I believe, the 02 means that it's the second listed dependent, that indicates it's my daughter -- who doesn't file taxes.

I know in either case we now need to print and file by mail -- but can someone confirm my understanding of the code so that I can take the appropriate steps.  Is there anyway my co-filing wife could be "01" and my son "02"?

Have you tried looking at your son's Form 1040 to see if the box is checked that says he can be claimed as someone's dependent?

IND-517-02 - The second dependent.

Did just before I saw your message.

He's been at practice all night. When he got home and I asked if he could log in and show me his tax return and told him why, he said, "I bet I didn't check the dependent box."

Sure enough -- that's it.

His taxes have been amended.
I'm now killing a tree (not really -- recycled paper) printing taxes to be filed by mail.

Thank you for your help.

You do not have to wait for him to amend.  You can mail your return when you have it ready to put in an envelope.  If it is any comfort, this is a very common problem for parents with teenagers or young adults who are filing tax returns for the first time.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
