Please Help!

I am in the process of amending my return and it keeps getting rejected. I see that people have tried to put 0 in for spouse AGI or select they didn't file the previous year but I don't see any of those options in the amended return pages. I've gone through the amend return process about 10 times and I don't see anywhere a place to put the AGI for both me and/or my spouse.

Yes, the AGI question comes up in Step 1 under the File section. Here's how to fix this:

 

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Select Fix my return, then select File.
  3. On the Just one more step screen, select the Start to the right of Step 1.
  4. Continue through the order screens until you get to the signature section. You can correct your AGI here.
  5. Select Continue, or Continue to file, until you submit your tax return.

There is no 'Fix my return' when I amend my return. It takes me to the amend process and on the side its only Amend (which is continuing to do what I'm doing) or Cancel Amend.

I am trying to Amend my return. When I filed the Amended return the first 5 times it keeps getting rejected with this error.

This is usually a reject for an original return, not an amended return.

 

The IRS uses your prior year AGI to combat fraud.   

 

You can find your 2022 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) by: 

 

  • Looking at line11 on page 1 of your 2022 Form 1040; or 
  • You can request a transcript of your 2022 tax return from the IRS to ensure you have the right number. You can request your transcript online at the following link: Get Transcript  

Check these items as well to ensure you have the correct number.  If you: 

  • Filed late last year after mid-November or your return was processed after that time—try entering 0
  • Amended your return last year—make sure you’re using the AGI from your original return, not the amended one. (If you only have a 1040X form, it’s on line 1, column A). 
  • Rounded your AGI to the nearest dollar—be sure to round up when it’s 50 cents or more and down when it’s 49 cents or less. 
  • Filed with your spouse last year—you and your spouse have the same 2022 AGI. (Don’t split the AGI amount or enter  0  for one of you). 

 

Time-saving Tip: If what you entered is correct and you continue to get a reject, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return.

How can I change my original return when it got accepted already. My original return was accepted but I am amending it because I had to change the filing status. I can't make changes to the original return, only the amended return. When I try to make changes to my amended return I am not able to see where I can input an AGI.

The question about AGI only comes up in Step 1 of the File section. If you can't access the File section for some reason, you will have to print and mail in your amended tax return. 

 

Here's how to fix this:

 

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Select Add State, then select File.
  3. On the Just one more step screen, select the Start to the right of Step 1.
  4. Continue through the order screens until you get to the signature section. You can correct your AGI here.
  5. Select Continue, or Continue to file, until you submit your tax return.

If you can't do this for some reason, you can print the return from the Print Center. Here's how to do that:

 

 

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Select Tax Tools from the left-side menu, then Print Center.
  3. Select Print, save or preview this year's return at the bottom of the screen. 
  4. Follow the prompts to print or save a copy of the return.

There is no Add State and select File button. When I log in the only thing I can do is either download my filed taxes or amend it and when I amend it there are no options to select File.

You can select Amend to get in the return. If you don't see a left-side menu, you may need to expand the window, or select the menu icon in the upper left corner. 

 

If you still don't see File, just keep hitting Continue until you get to Just one more step, select the Start to the right of Step 1.


Continue through the order screens until you get to the signature section. You can correct your AGI here.


Select Continue, or Continue to file, until you submit your tax return.

When I select the Start and go to step 1, it doesn't show anything besides the payment options. Also, I've already paid so it just takes me straight to the receipt.

Yes, keep going past the payment and receipt screens.

There is nothing passed the receipt. I only have the option to view the receipt and when I try to view the receipt, it only shows the actual receipt itself and a continue button. When I hit continue it takes me back to the screen with steps 1, 2, and 3.

You can print and mail in your amended return since, you aren't able to correct it. To do that:

 

 

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Select Fix my return. 
  3. Select Tax Tools from the left-side menu, then Print Center.
  4. Select Print, save or preview this year's return at the bottom of the screen. 
  5. Follow the on-screen directions to print your 1040-X.
  6. When the Form Selection box pops up, select Specific Forms, and Form only.
  7. A list of forms will appear in the window, scroll down to Form 1040X, and select the checkbox.
  8. Select Save as PDF, or Preview print copy, then print the forms after the file is generated. 

 

Your Form 1040X should be signed on page 2 and mailed. Follow this link to find the mailing address for your state.

What filing status are you changing?  I believe you can not efile an  amended return to change the  filing status.
