We both were on disability and the kids had been getting benefits under me when it should have been through him. In Jan 2018 They each received a payment of $6500 which included their first survivor benefit and back pay for the mistake. My disability benefits didn't change due to his death.

It depends what type of disability they received. If it was Social Security Disability/Survivor benefits, and they had no other income, they would not have to file because the social security income would not be taxable.
