Did you click that big orange button that said “Transmit my return now?” If you did that, you cannot do anything to fix it yet. You have to wait for the email that tells you if your return was accepted or rejected.
You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.
If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.
Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
The Form 1040X you might need becomes available in late February, But wait until your return has been processed.
So if it does get accepted does that mean the refund will be processed and deposited in my account on the normal 21 day timeframe that they said it would be? Or would it be delayed longer? If it is rejected I would just have to start the filing process over again or?
Also if it gets rejected would they send me a letter in the mail or would it be an email to inform me that it was rejected? I’ve never had to do this before so just want to get things set right as soon as possible so I can receive my return sooner.
It should process normally ... the computer that catches missing income sends notices in 2-3 years.
So once they accept and I receive it. Should I start the amendment process right away? I don’t want to owe or get any penalty fees to the IRS.
Yes, you should amend your return as soon as possible because you need to know if you have to pay back part of your original refund, but as soon as possible is after February 15, even if you get your refund sooner.
The IRS won't accept an amendment before that date, so the option isn't available yet.
If you owe when you file your amendment, just pay the tax due on or before April 15 and you won't owe any penalties.
As far as being notified of a rejection, this comes as an email from TurboTax, or a text, if you signed up for text alerts. You can also check your status by signing in to your TurboTax account.
Okay, last question! Also thank you so much for the help with this guys!
So after feb 15th or when I receive my full refund and I send in the form to amend my taxes would that “most likely” mean I would owe back taxes? Or would I get more? I’m confused on that part.. if I file an amendment would it be very likely I’d have to pay back some of the amount they gave me?
It depends on the income and tax withholding on the W-2.
