No. You do not need to amend. As you said, the Grand Rapids tax return is not going anywhere unless you mail it.
If you’d like to delete Grand Rapids, you can go back into the Michigan section.
Thanks @ErnieS0! Do I need to amend my Michigan return to take Grand Rapids off? I won’t be dinged on saying I worked in Grand Rapids when I actually do not, will I?
No you don't have to amend Michigan. Grand Rapids is a separate tax return. MI and Grand Rapids taxes are not related. Plus MI has a copy of your W-2 so they know where you worked.
Thanks again for the quick response @ErnieS0 ! Is there something I can do in the future to make sure this doesn’t happen again?
Just double check ahead of working on your return for the work locality, so you enter the correct one.
The local tax boxes (18-20) on your W-2 will give you a clue as to what city returns to file. They will have a locality name (Box 20) which needs to be coded into TurboTax. TurboTax online usually has the whole name, e.g. Detroit.
City taxes are not e-filed by TurboTax. If you do not owe the city taxes, you do not need to mail them in.
Which city tax returns can I do in the TurboTax state program?
Ahh, gotcha. My boxes are blank for 18-20. Good to know. Also, I’ve made this same mistake for my last years taxes and paid city taxes when I didn’t need to. Is there a way to recover any of those funds? @ErnieS0
You can file amended Grand Rapids income tax returns. Unfortunately, TurboTax does not support the amended form.
Here is a link to the Grand RapidsGrand Rapids tax forms.
