Apparently, you never filed your original return with the IRS. THe amended return will not be processed by the IRS. So you can treat it "as if" you never did an original return. If you amended your return with the online version, then the original no longer exists in your online account. So now you get to start over and hopefully, do it right from the start so an amended return will not be needed.

Ok, how do I start it over? Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question.

If you already paid your online TurboTax Fees, this WILL NOT WORK and you will have to call TurboTax Customer Service telephone support.

With your return open so you can edit it, click My Account at the top right and select the "clear and start over" option. If that option is not available, then you already paid your online fees and will have to call customer service. There is no other way. Understand this is a public user-to-user forum. So nobody in this forum can assist you with starting over if you already paid your fees. You *have* to call customer service on the telephone. Note also that the "Call Us" button does not work when customer support is closed.

@alimachuca As an alternative to having to reconstruct your 1040 as originally prepared, you could do the following. The form 1040 that currently exists in your file should be accurate because it has the changes you made to correct the 1040 tax return the IRS didn't get. Just print the 1040 that's in your file, send it to the IRS at the address they told you, and instruct them to destroy the 1040X since it is no longer needed.

If you prefer to recreate your original return as you prepared it originally, you may be able to undo the amended return and then make the changes to the return in your file to take out the changes you made for the amended return. After undoing the amended return, you must change the return back to where it was originally. This is instead of completely starting over. Here are the undo instructions: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2552802-how-do-i-cancel-or-undo-an-amended-return-in-turbotax-onli... users have said the undo process doesn't work correctly.

@alimachuca  The more I think about this the more I think you should probably just do as the IRS suggested which is to send in a copy of the 1040 as it was first prepared. Sending the revised 1040 as it was revised for the amended return and advising the IRS to destroy the 1040X may just confuse the IRS. To prepare a copy of the first 1040 prepared, you can either try to undo the amended return and change it back to the first 1040 or you can clear and start over and prepare the first 1040 from scratch.

Since the 1040 that was prepared when you prepared the amended return form 1040X shows the way your return would have been filed originally had you done it correctly to begin with, just print and mail the form 1040 that is in the file that includes the 1040X. Do not mail the 1040X with it.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: This recommendation may confuse the IRS and may not be the best course of action. You should probably prepare your first 1040 that the IRS never received and send it to the IRS. See the comments for alternative ways to prepare the first 1040 again.

It's my ubderstanding that the 1040X overrides the 1040, unless the user saved the 1040 in a different file.

That is correct. Since the IRS never received the first 1040, I was suggesting that they print and mail the corrected 1040 and tell the IRS to destroy the 1040X since it is not needed. A 1040X is only needed to correct a filed and accepted 1040. A 1040 has never been filed and accepted.

Oh, I thought you were referring to the original 1040:
"Just print the 1040 that's in your file"
