See the information below from Missouri Department of Revenue.  Sounds like there may be a dependency credit for the state return.  If you use TurboTax to prepare your return, this credit will be automatically computed if you enter all information.  What type of notice was received?  Are you required to enter something from the notice that would generate the credit?

Use this link for MDOR

143.161.  Missouri dependency exemptions. — 1.  For all taxable years beginning after December 31, 1997, a resident may deduct one thousand two hundred dollars for each dependent for whom such resident is entitled to a dependency exemption deduction for federal income tax purposes, provided that the exemption amount as defined under 26 U.S.C. Section 151 is not zero.  In the case of a dependent who has attained sixty-five years of age on or before the last day of the taxable year, if such dependent resides in the taxpayer's home or the dependent's own home or if such dependent does not receive Medicaid or state funding while residing in a facility licensed pursuant to chapter 198, the taxpayer may deduct an additional one thousand dollars.

  2.  For all taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 1999, a resident who qualifies as an unmarried head of household or as a surviving spouse for federal income tax purposes may deduct an additional one thousand four hundred dollars.

  3.  For all taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2015, for each birth for which a certificate of birth resulting in stillbirth has been issued under section 193.165, a taxpayer may claim the exemption under subsection 1 of this section only in the taxable year in which the stillbirth occurred, if the child otherwise would have been a member of the taxpayer's household.

It is a notice about the personal exemption and how Missouri will reestablish the personal exemption in 2022 individual income tax return. I have a credit and I don't know where to enter it. If it automatically takes it off the amount I owe, it hasn't reduced it yet. I still show I owe 529. The credit is not listed anywhere on the forms for review.

I think you need to clarify if you have a credit versus you may qualify for a credit. If you have a credit, which is usually from an overpayment of tax in a prior year, you can enter it in the federal section of TurboTax in the Deductions and Credits section and then Estimates and Other Taxes Paid. Also, if you don't enter the credit on your tax return, the state will probably refund it anyways when they process your tax return.

If you were informed you will or may qualify for a credit on this year's tax return, then you need to make sure you entered all of your information regarding you and others listed on the tax return correctly, and TurboTax will calculate any credit you are entitled to automatically. @smarieb5

Hi,

It says credit and the amounts per year under it and a total. I says if owed a credit it reduces the amount owed if you owe taxes. I'm going to keep trying to get through to the MDOR. It has a notice number and everything to reference on the letter. Thanks for your help. I will also look at those sections again in TurboTax.

I have the same question and the other person replying to you has no clue. It says it will be applied automatically but Turbo Tax seems unaware or unable to allow it to be entered. I also have the letter and owe money. My concern is that I pay Turbo Tax to file my Missouri state tax because I owe, MDOR credits me back and I actually end up with a refund but somehow it all gets tangled up and I lose out on fees and service charges because Turbo Tax isn't keeping up with MDOR. If I could just enter the credit amount from my letter, I would be getting a refund and my tax return should be handled as a refund, not an owed amount, credit then refund (which seems fraught with peril).

Please clarify. The program asks a lot of questions. Some things are applied, some need entry. There are many MO credits and many letters.

If you mean  143.161 RSMO that is a dependency exemption.

I found your question after I asked the same question.  It doesn't look like you've received the answer you're looking for,  so I will tell you what I was told:

Since it's the MDoR that is issuing the credit, the extra amount that will be retroactively refunded will not be reflected on TurboTax, and there is no place to put it on TurboTax.  The MDoR will just add the amount listed on your letter to your 2022 state refund.  (Also, no need to amend previous years.)

My question and the answer I received.
