A 2019 tax return can only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed.
Print, sign, date and mail the tax return to the IRS. Include with the mailed return any forms W-2 and 1099 which have taxes withheld. Go to this IRS website for mailing addresses - https://www.irs.gov/filing/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment
There are no penalties for filing a tax return after the due date if filing for a tax refund or there are no taxes owed.
Note - If you are filing the 2019 tax return for a tax refund the time to file the return has expired. The 2019 tax return had to be filed on or before July 17, 2023 with a tax refund.
However, if you filed a 2019 extension request and it was approved by the IRS then the 2019 tax return with a refund can be filed at any time on or before October 15, 2023.
A tax return with taxes owed can be filed at any time but penalties and interest will continue to accrue until the taxes owed have been paid. Then the IRS will send you a bill in the mail for the penalty and interest payments due.
@DoninGA - are you sure? I thought the deadline is 3 years from the filing deadline, which was July 17, 2023 as you stated. I thought the original extension only extends the original deadline, not the 3 year deadline.
<<However, if you filed a 2019 extension request and it was approved by the IRS then the 2019 tax return with a refund can be filed at any time on or before October 15, 2023.>>
can you please point me to a link that supports that? thx in advance.
this news release speficially noted July 17 and didn't mention anything about extending beyond that if you originally had an extention.
@NCperson If an extension was filed then due date is October 15 for filing a return. It has always been my understanding that since the due date is now in October versus April, the taxpayer has up to 3 years to file for a refund from extended date in October.
I'll look around to see if I can find any type of written statement to that affect.
@NCperson How about here - https://www.irs.gov/filing/time-you-can-claim-a-credit-or-refund
Your credit or refund is limited to the amount you paid during the 3 years before you filed the claim, plus any extensions of time you had to file your return.
