Turbotax does not receive updates on the status of your refunds, and it cannot get or provide information about why they are still pending. Only the IRS can tell you why.

Call 800-829-1040

  • Choose your language,
  • Then choose option 2
  • Then 1
  • Then 3
  • Then 2
  • When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN do nothing – wait - - After it asks twice, you will get another menu
  • Then 2
  • Then 3

It should then transfer you to an agent. Note when its phone line are busy you may be on hold for a long while or disconnected

Paying your TurboTax fees did not file your tax returns.  Did you go all the way through the FILE section and e-file those returns?    Do you remember clicking a big orange button that said "Transmit my returns now?"   If you did not do that, then you did not file the returns.  Do you still have emails from those years?   What does it say in your account?   Does it show that your returns were accepted---does it say something else, like "rejected", "printed," or "ready to mail?"

Did you e-file?  Did you click a big orange button that said “Transmit my returns now?”

When you e-file your federal return you will receive two emails from TurboTax.  The first one will say that your return was submitted.  The second email will tell you if your federal return was accepted or rejected.  If you e-filed a state return, there will be a third email to tell you if the state accepted or rejected your state return.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

If the IRS accepted it, what does it say here?

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

Or does your account say “Ready to Mail?”

Note:  If it says “Ready to Mail” or “Printed” that means YOU have to mail it yourself.  TurboTax does not mail your tax return for you.

If the returns were accepted, and you did not receive your refunds, you need to follow up with the IRS.  TurboTax gets no updates after you file your return, and cannot find out for you.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2023 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

If you discover that your returns were not filed, then file them now by mail.  E-filing is closed for all past years, but you can print the returns, sign and date them ink, and mail them in.  Do not combine tax years--use separate envelopes.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
