I mistakenly claimed my son as a dependent and I have already filed my 2020 taxes. How do I fix this?

My son graduated college in May and began working full time in June.

Depending on the circumstances, you may still be eligible to claim your son as a dependent for 2020.  If you are claiming any education credits for his college tuition, changing the dependency status will affect those credits if you are eligible to claim him as a dependent.

That being said, if you want to make a change to your return so that you are not claiming your son as a dependent, then you will need to file an amended return.

Take a look at the following TurboTax articles for information about amending your return.  Be aware that the forms required for amending are not ready yet.  In the meantime, you can enter your email through the link in the article to be notified when they are ready.

I'm in the same boat - except it is now May 17th 2021.   I electronically filed my 2020 return and then my son submitted his return.  I had claimed him as a dependent last year and I thought I deleted him as a dependent for this year -- but somehow when I filed, my return still showed him as a dependent.  My son's return was rejected because he stated he was not claimed on another return.  (The irony is that both returns were open at the same time within TurboTax and a final review of both did not catch the inconsistency!  UGH.)  This is a big deal as the discrepancy will cause us a lot of effort to correct and significant differences in tax due!!!  WHAT IS THE BEST APPROACH NOW?    From what I've read so far, it seems I need to file an amended return and he needs to print and file his return by mail.  UGH.  Thanks a lot Turbo Tax.  Any better ideas please let me know asap.
