I haven't filed my tax yet and realized some mistakes in the tax. How can I modify it without ammending it? It seems strange that I can't modify when I haven't filed

Do NOT click on the amend link, or you'll have problems.

If TurboTax thinks you were finished, but you aren't, then as long as you haven't actually filed (haven't efiled and haven't printed and mailed), here's how to open the unfiled return back up to continue working on it, make edits, etc.

  • Log into your account, and at the Tax Home or in the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents" for 2019, look for a link "Add a State."
  • Click on "Add a State."  (That doesn't really add one; that's just to open the return.)
  • Once the return is open, you can make any edits you need to.
  • Before filing go through the REVIEW section to be sure everything is still in order.
  • Then go to the FILE section to choose a filing method, etc.
  • If efiling, be sure you go all the way to the last screen where there is a big orange "Transmit Returns Now" button and click to transmit.

Thank you! I wonder why they made it so difficult to figure that out....

It was my first time using Turbotax and I guess I wanted to see the information in PDF format.

However, it seemed like they thought I was done with it and was strange how I couldn't go back to modify it if I haven't filed it or sent it.

Unfortunately, I already clicked "ammend" but luckily the federal part is the main section where I needed to ammend and it doesn't affect the state tax.

Uh-oh.  If you clicked on "Amend" and then proceeded on subsequent screens, it may have begun a Form 1040X Amended Return.   If a Form 1040X is in your return, it won't let you efile, and it needs to be removed regardless.     If you actually started an amended return, you need to reverse it.  See this:
