I got a state refund for 2023 taxes... I had to do amended return and had to pay .... so the amount from state for 2023 is not as much. How do I report?

I think your talking about getting a 1099-G from the state.

  • If the entire process happened in 2024 the state should have reflected the net refund on the 1099-G
  • Even if they did not it would depend on if you received Itemized deductions in 2023. If not, it has no effect.
  • This is because if you Itemized you may have taken your entire withholdings as a deduction.
    • The refund indicates that the deduction was too high.
    • So if you didn't Itemize, there is no consequence.
    • If you did Itemize there is a procedure in TurboTax to correct it.

See Where do I enter a 1099-G for a state or local tax refund?

If your refund is taxable, the program will calculate any taxable portion. After you have entered the form, done, back on the main screen, done, Let's see if your refund is taxable will pop up, if the computer doesn't already know the answers. Answer those questions until done.

Do I need to report the state or local refund I got last year? Is it taxable? states: If all three of the following are true, your refund counts as taxable income:

  • You itemized deductions last year, instead of taking the standard deduction.
  • You claimed state and local income taxes (not general sales taxes).
  • Claiming the deduction helped you increase your federal refund or lower your tax bill.

Many people pay more state and local taxes than the $10,000 cap. Only taxes that were deducted on itemized deductions are taxable. If you paid in say $15,000 of state and local tax with a refund of $4,000, it was not used on your itemized deductions and isn't taxable.

Take a look at your Federal smart worksheet to verify the answers.
