Do you mean you filed 2023 with 2024 OR you filed each year as Joint and want to change to Married filing Separate?   You can’t amend to change Joint  to Married filing Separate.

You cannot amend your filing status from married filing jointly to married filing separately after the due date of the tax return, which has now passed for both 2023 and 2024.

The only exception to that rule is if your joint tax return was invalid because you were not actually married at the end of the tax year. If that is your situation, correcting it is very complicated and requires the assistance of a tax professional who is familiar with the procedure. If you just file an amended return changing the filing status the IRS will reject it.

Your post is unclear.   We cannot tell if you are referring to the filing status you used---married filing jointly or married filing separately, or if you mean you combined all of your 2023 and 2024 income and put it on one tax return.   Please clarify.

OK,

I do apologize. I can see how it appears I am asking to file separately in filing status, however that isn't my intended question. Can I file 2023 solely submitted. Then file my 2024 solely submitted. I believe my 2023 was included with earnings for 2024 causing errors in due taxes

Yes 2023 and 2024 together. My concern is it gave me a false earnings for 2024 causing me to owe substantially high due taxes

@nate_lampkin

If you combined income from 2023 and 2024 on the same tax return, your tax return was all wrong and you will need to amend.   Each year has to be filed separately using the forms and software for the specific year in which you received the income.   You will need to amend your 2024 return to remove any 2023 income that you included on that form.   Leave the 2024 income on the return.

Wait until your original return has been fully processed before you amend, and make sure you have saved a pdf of the original return before you amend. (If you do not save it as a pdf, the amended return will overwrite the original, and the original will be lost forever)

Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.

And you will need to file a 2023 tax return for only your 2023 income.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2021, 2022, and  2023 is permanently closed.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

To file a return for a prior tax year

 If you need to prepare a return for 2021, 2022, or 2023  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
