I filed Form 1040 with TurboTax and realized it has to be 1040NR-EZ instead. How do amend 1040 that already field to 1040NR-EZ?

If your return has been filed and accepted by the IRS, you will need to file an amended return.

You need to complete the top portion 1040X including items A and B, the signature at the bottom of page 1, and
Part II on page 2. See https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040x.pdf for a PDF of form 1040X.

It will be easier to complete 1040X outside of Turbo Tax.

You will complete form 1040NR-EZ or 1040NR

Turbo Tax does not support the 1040NR. However, Turbo Tax has partnered with Sprintax for assistance in preparing US tax returns by international filers.  See https://www.sprintax.com/non-resident-alien-tax-1040nr-turbotax.html. if you need help with the 1040NR.

You will print and mail into the IRS the following:
 - Form 1040X
 - Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ with “AS AMENDED” written on top of each page, and
 - a copy of the Form 1040 you originally submitted with “COPY OF ORIGINALLY SUBMITTED” on top of each page.

Mail to the address provided in the IRS 1040X instruction.

I filed Form 1040 with TurboTax and realized it has to be 1040NR-EZ instead. How do amend 1040 that already field to 1040NR-EZ?

complete the top portion 1040X including items A and B, the signature at the bottom of page 1

1) What are you referring to as items A and B in the 1040x form? I do not see A's and B's in the form.

2)Page one of 1040x does not ask for any signature. Do i still need to sign on the first page? if yes where?

1040NR-EZ with “AS AMENDED” written on top of each page,

3) Do we attach 8843 form with the 1040NR-EZ form and write "AS AMENDED" on top 8843 form as well?

Please do clarify! Thanks

I filed Form 1040 with TurboTax and realized it has to be 1040NR-EZ instead. How do amend 1040 that already field to 1040NR-EZ?

Quoted from the IRS TAX Guide for Aliens, "Resident and nonresident aliens.   Use Form 1040X to amend Form 1040NR or Form 1040NR-EZ. Also, use Form 1040X if you should have filed Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ instead of Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ, or vice versa.
To amend Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ, or to file the correct return, do the following:
Enter your name, current address, and social security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) on the front of Form 1040X.

Don’t enter any other information on page 1. Also, don’t complete Parts I or II on page 2 of Form 1040X.

Enter in Part III the reason why you are filing Form 1040X.

Complete a new or corrected return (Form 1040, Form 1040NR, etc.).

Across the top of the new or corrected return, write “Amended.”

Attach the new or corrected return to the back of Form 1040X.

For more information, see Pub. 519, U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens." Link: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1040x/ch01.html#d0e275">https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1040x/ch...> - scroll to the bottom.

I filed Form 1040 with TurboTax and realized it has to be 1040NR-EZ instead. How do amend 1040 that already field to 1040NR-EZ?

@TurboTaxFern So one shouldn't enter any numbers in col. A,B,C correct? Just the name, ssn, address on the top of 1040X and reason for amending in Part III is sufficient.. Please help. Thanks.

I filed Form 1040 with TurboTax and realized it has to be 1040NR-EZ instead. How do amend 1040 that already field to 1040NR-EZ?

@TurboTaxFern Could you please answer on this? one shouldn't enter any numbers in col. A,B,C correct amount values?

I filed Form 1040 with TurboTax and realized it has to be 1040NR-EZ instead. How do amend 1040 that already field to 1040NR-EZ?

I filed Form 1040A for 2017 and now realized it has to be 1040NR instead. So I used Sprintax to file 1040NR. Sprintax asked "Have you filed a US federal tax return before?". I filed 1040EZ for 2016 but it has only 4 options to choose for 2016 filed form which are 1040NR, 1040NR-EZ, 1040, and 1040A. Which one should I choose?

I filed Form 1040 with TurboTax and realized it has to be 1040NR-EZ instead. How do amend 1040 that already field to 1040NR-EZ?

Thank you for this useful info. I m sending today my 1040-X because I have been filing my taxes through Turbotax but turns out it shouldn't be used by non resident aliens as I am. As from instructions, I'm adding to the 1040-X also a copy of the wrongfully originally submitted 1040 and a copy of the amended 1040-NR-EZ.
3 questions:
1) address. Shall I still to the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Austin, TX 73301
I also found this address: Austin - Internal Revenue Submission Processing Center 3651 S IH35, Austin TX 78741. They are slightly different. Which one is the right one?

2) shall I wait first to receive an answer from Internal Revenue Center before filing for the 2020 taxes? If not, can I file the 2020 taxes on Spring Tax by uploading the amended 1040-NR-EZ?
3) Concerning the State Tax Return, I cannot help but noticing that it would have been a slightly different amount if I would have filed through Spring Tax instead of Turbo Tax. How can I amend that? And again, as for the 2020 taxes, shall I upload on Spring Tax the 2019 Spring Tax State Tax Return (which I didn't submit) or the one that I actually wrongfully originally submitted through Turbo Tax?
Thank you for your most appreciated help.

I filed Form 1040 with TurboTax and realized it has to be 1040NR-EZ instead. How do amend 1040 that already field to 1040NR-EZ?

1) Yes. This is still the correct address to file the return.

  • Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Austin, TX 73301-021 (without payment enclosed)
  • Internal Revenue Service, P. O. Box 1303, Charlotte, NC 28201-1303 (with a payment enclosed)

2) No. You can file your 2020 tax return once you have all of your documents necessary to complete the return. You will not be able to upload any information from TurboTax to Sprintax. However if you have entered information for 2019, then it's quite likely they will have a transfer of data from one year to the next.

3) Check the state website to determine their amendment requirements. You should file the state return for 2020 with your federal return when you are ready. It is not necessary to wait for the amendments of prior years to file the current year.

I filed Form 1040 with TurboTax and realized it has to be 1040NR-EZ instead. How do amend 1040 that already field to 1040NR-EZ?

So just a curious question. If the tax refund has been accepted and the refund money is received, after amending, will the candidate have to return the concerned differences? Thanks.

I filed Form 1040 with TurboTax and realized it has to be 1040NR-EZ instead. How do amend 1040 that already field to 1040NR-EZ?

Yes,  If a tax return has an error in it, and you file an amended return, you would have to pay any additional tax that would result from the amendment.

However, if it was a stimulus payment it may not be affected.

I filed Form 1040 with TurboTax and realized it has to be 1040NR-EZ instead. How do amend 1040 that already field to 1040NR-EZ?

I have file the wrong 1040 and have received a stimulus payment from IRS and realized that I am not eligible for that. I have to file 1040NR instead. Will I get a penalty for that?

I filed Form 1040 with TurboTax and realized it has to be 1040NR-EZ instead. How do amend 1040 that already field to 1040NR-EZ?

File a 1040X to amend the 1040 you filed and also a 1040NR.

The stimulus payment will need to be mailed back.

On the 1040X enter your information, don't enter the numbers from your original 1040 but enter in Part ||| that you should have filed 1040NR instead.

Next, complete your 1040NR and write AMENDED across the top.

Send both forms to the IRS. Print and mail them, do not e-file.

Pay whatever the difference in the 1040 versus the 1040NR. For example, if the 1040NR says you owe 100 and your original 1040 had a refund of 200, you'll need to pay 300.

Mail the stimulus back to the address provided by where you live. Include a note as to why you are returning it. If it is a check, write VOID on the check. If it was Direct deposit, write EIP 1 for first payment or EIP 2 for the second or EIP 3 for the third.

If it was the "Recovery Rebate Credit", include it with your amended tax returns.

I filed Form 1040 with TurboTax and realized it has to be 1040NR-EZ instead. How do amend 1040 that already field to 1040NR-EZ?

Hi,

Just to make sure I understood you. I click on 1040X and column A, B and C should be blank? and only fill up part III? Then, I attach a correct 1040NR and the original incorrect 1040, right?

I filed a 1040 instead of 1040NR. I claimed a recovery credit for EIP1 and EIP2. Total refund received was $3356. Shouldn't  I correct 1040  with a 1040X and remove the Recovery credit and the refund? or the IRS will do it automatically when I submit 1040X?

Thank your so much for your help.

So, I have made the same mistake, now, I have solution to it, but in Sprintax, I still do not see an option to edit 2021 yet,
Also, when that option comes up, do I need to pay fees for Sprintax again, I have already paid for TurboTax
