I didn't file taxes in 2016 because I was in prison and a question has come up wanting to know if I filed single, divorxed, widowed etc. How do I answer that?

Your answer would be 'NONE' since you did not file.  For tax purposes, your marital status is your status as of the last day of the tax year, so 12/31/2016 in your case.
