You can reverse/cancel your election to defer your self-employment taxes.
Please follow these steps in TurboTax to change your election:
I clicked no and it still still shows my deferral amount. I only ever clicked no, but turbo tax kept saying I had to enter line 18 of Sch SE-T, so I did. I have clicked no to the deferral over and over, but my schedule 3 still shows the deferral amount. I have even deleted the form as per previous posts suggests, but got the same results as everyone else. The form just comes back asking for line 18 again.
Yes! I'm using Turbotax Online Self-Employement and since it won't let you edit forms I cannot get rid of the SE tax deferral. I keep saying no over and over again. It even tells me I don't qualify because I'm already getting a refund, but the credit never goes away! On my first federal review it had returned an error and asked me to fill in an amount on a form (section 3 of Schedule SE probably) about the amount attributable to March 31-Dec. 31 and that's when it then put in the deferral for the first time and it won't go way. Afraid my return will be rejected and I can't even start over because I've already paid and was ready to file when I discovered the issue.
This is a serious glitch in the software!
@npierson7 @PattiF @JeffreyR77 @LenaH @MaryK4 @DMarkM1 I've seen you answer questions related to the deferral but were you aware of this bug?
I'm sure you saw the reply below, but I also have the deferral that won't go away even after I say "no" that I don't want to defer, AND the interview told me I don't qualify but it's still there.
@tktcnet You may need to delete the form. See How to Delete
The deferral option only applies to Social Security taxes for self-employment incomes you earned from March 27,2020 through December 31,2020. The income is typically reported on a Schedule C. If you've already paid your self-employment taxes or they were withheld on your W2, you're not eligible to defer them.
Thanks so much @AmyC for the suggestion to delete a form. I didn't realize I could do that in the online version. It seems like I could delete Schedule SE or perhaps Schedule 3. I do need both those forms though so will the regenerate automatically when I do the review, or should I go back through my income again? My Schedule SE comes because of clergy income on a W2 (employee for federal tax and self-employed for social security/SECA).
The program keeps any form it is convinced you need. The SE for clergy income would definitely regenerate. It is always smart to review your return before filing. See How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing?
