You should not file an amendment until after the IRS processes the return you originally filed. They will most likely correct issues regarding the recovery rebate on Line 30. If your original return has already been processed and you have received your refund or paid your tax, use these instructions to file an amendment if you still need to.
The IRS has already processed my initial return. That is how I am aware that this is an issue. The IRS, after processing my return, contacted me advising that I now owed them $1,200 for the stimulus payment that was claimed as being unreceived on my return. The TurboTax software automatically changed my total income for the year, along with this selection without my ever being informed of it. Due to this, I have been advised by the IRS to file an amendment to resolve both issues. The problem is that the amendment on the TurboTax website is not giving me any options to change this selection to show that I did, in fact, receive the $1,200 stimulus check. TurboTax has given me no assistance whatsoever in my numerous phone calls requesting help to resolve the errors created by the TurboTax software, so I have to try to figure this out myself. So, I just need my question answered. How do I change the claim regarding having not received a stimulus payment in an amendment?
As a side note: Yes, I am aware that it is ludicrous to be using the same software in an attempt to resolve the issue created by it in the first place. However, my attempts to manually file the amendment have proven fruitless as the "instructions" provided by the IRS make little to no sense. I am searching for help to resolve a situation that should have never been created in the first place, and this has been my only resource for assistance. Trust, I shall NEVER use TurboTax again after this.
You can probably just pay the $1200 and be done with it. But if you need to file the amendment, use the instructions, and when you are inside your return, search for stimulus and use the Jump to stimulus link and answer that you received the payment.
