Ideally you should have kept a separate .taxfile of the original return so you can simply delete the tax file you no longer want ... but if you did not ...
If you started amending your federal return by accident and would like to cancel the amendment, follow this process to correctly "unamend" your federal return:
State Amendments
The best way to "unamend" your state return is to go through your state return from the beginning and keep your eyes peeled for amend-related screens or questions.
The amend question usually appears right at the beginning or towards the end of the state interview (never in the middle).
Correct any entries that have to do with an amended return, e.g.:
If you still can't get rid of your state amendment form, try clearing your state return and starting over.
If you are not planning to file, having a dangling 1040-X in your tax return can be ignored.
Note: I've found that if you try to unwind/cancel an amendment and start over, TurboTax gets confused and it never recovers from that to permit a correct 1040-X.
Thanks for the advice. Since the TurboTax amendment does not appear to be correct, I do not plan to submit the amendment.
Thank you for the reply and the detailed instructions --they make a lot of sense. If I can create a duplicate return/amendment, I will try the steps you described to see if TurboTax restores back to the original return that was e-filed. Since I do not believe TurboTax correctly calculated the amendment, I am concerned more damage will be done to the return -- that's why I need a duplicate.
