How do I change the amount of overpayment credit from the prior year's return? It was wrong (too much) in the original, and TT is carrying over the wrong amount.

When I processed my 2023 tax return, it showed I was getting a refund and I elected to have the refund (overpayment) applied to my 2024 taxes. The IRS later informed me that I made a mistake and actually owed them money. (I mistakenly double-counted one of the estimated tax payments that I made.) I paid the tax due, which wasn't large. However, that meant I didn't have a refund to apply to 2024. Now I'm doing my 2024 taxes (filed for an extension) but Turbo Tax is showing the erroneous credit from the prior year's return, which will make my taxes wrong again this year. How can I remove the 2023 over-payment/credit? I can't find a way to adjust this number.

Here's how to edit the overpayment amount.  I don't know what product you are using, so I've provided steps for both.

Online TurboTax:

  • Log in and open your 2024 return, if not already open.
  • Once the return is open, click on the Search icon at the top right (magnifying glass).
  • In the search box enter this exact phrase:  applied overpayment  (without quotes) and then click the adjacent magnifying glass icon.
  • Click on Jump to applied overpayment.
  • Next screen:  Estimates and Other Income Taxes Paid.
  • Scroll down about 2/3 of the page to 2023 Refund Applied to 2024 and expand that section.  In the submenu choose the proper topic for type of payment (Federal, State, Local.)

NOTE:  Before filing, make sure the corrected overpayment shows up correctly on your return.

These steps are for the desktop software:

  • Federal Taxes tab (Personal tab in Home and Business)
  • Subtab Deductions & Credits.
  • "I'll choose what I work on."
  • Your 2024 Deductions & Credits summary page.
  • Scroll down to the topic  "Estimates and Other Taxes Paid"
  • Choose subtopic "Other income taxes" and Start (or update.)
  • On the Other Income Taxes screen scroll down to the topic "2023 Refund Applied to 2024."
  • Choose the type of overpayment and click Start (or update.)
  • Make sure the corrected amount shows up on your Form 1040 before filing.

Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Other Income Taxes>2023 refund applied to 2024 federal taxes

in order to edit or remove that amount
