@Jshaye89 The dad cannot e-file this year ever. It takes months for an amended return to be processed. You put the child's SSN into the system for this year. The only way that the dad can file and claim the child is to file by mail. He will have to print, sign and mail his return and wait longer for it to be processed.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Thank you for your response. The issue here is that the father is self-employed and currently has to pay in $1000. Unless he gets the return with the dependent claimed and get the EIC credit, he will not be able to pay what he owes in taxes. Is there any way that this process can be sped up?
@Jshaye89 No. Sorry---there is no way to speed up the IRS. Millions of people wish they could. This problem was caused by your mistake, and now the other parent is suffering the consequences. Maybe you could loan him some money til he gets his refund.
So if I want to claim my brother as a depended and my mother would like to remove him, I should mail the return instead of waiting for my mom to receive her refund and file an amended form? My e-file was just rejected.
@Tommyleedoggy You will not ever be able to e-file a return claiming your brother as your dependent even if your mother amends. She put his SSN in the system and it will not be corrected in the system for a very long time. If you are the one who can claim your brother then your own return can only be filed by mail.

Hello, I claimed my mom on my taxes this year because she lives with me and I help her out. it was accepted by the IRS. But I then received a letter that I was missing her marketplace health info.
she gets a credit that equaled out to $10,000 for help with insurance. It’s simply isn’t worth claiming her, as I would owe more. can I amend this if I have not received my tax return because they were missing her market health place info? Or do I have to send in the 8962tax form info they are requesting, receive my tax return money, and then amend for her to be taken off??! Please help! I do not know what to do.
