How can I open a 2006 turbotax return?

I have the file but my 2006 turbotax does not run on my new computer

Doubtful any TurobTax software from 2006 can used on computer with a current Operating System.

But you can try this if the software loads but will not run (Windows OS only) -

Right click on the desktop icon

Click on Properties 

Click on the Compatibility tab

Choose XP

Click on Apply and OK

See if the program will start

 

If that did not work then the only thing I can think of to access the 2006 .tax file is sending it to https://www.taxprinter.com/

There will be a fee and not recommending them in any way and have never used them, but they have been around for several years.

I also would not expect a 2006 software package to run on a new computer. However, I would expect a new version of TurboTax to be able to read an old TurboTax file.

Nope.  You need the same year program installed to open a .tax file.  And it needs to be updated and the state program downloaded to open it.

 

If you have old .tax files you can try converting them to pdf files at  Www.Taxprinter.Com
