How can I fix my return

If you need to change the question if someone else can you as a dependent, go to My Info and click Edit by your name.  Then scroll down to #3.   Click on Add a State to let you back into your return.

How can I fix my return

If you already filed your tax return the only way to change that is to prepare a Form 1040X to amend your return.  But you should not send it in until your original return has been fully processed by the IRS.  If you amend to change your answer as to whether you can be someone else's dependent, that question is in My Info.

Did you answer the question incorrectly and cause someone else's e-file to be rejected?  If so, they have to print sign and mail their return now.  They cannot e-file this year.  The only way to claim you on a tax return now is by paper filing.

How do I amend my 2019 TurboTax Online return?

A 1040X cannot be e-filed.  It must be printed and mailed.  It will take about 4 months for the IRS to process an amended return.  It is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it, like UPS or certified mail, so you will know it was received.

Wait about 3 weeks from mailing and you can check the status of your amended return:

Although the above tells you it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return, it is currently taking a lot longer during the pandemic.   So if you amend now in August, be pleasantly surprised if the IRS processes it in 2020.
