How can I delete/void a prior year return? It needs to be totally redone

Was the return filed?   If you filed it  you have to amend using the amend process.   Or..... was it never completed /filed?

You cannot work on a past year return using online TurboTax.  Online preparation is permanently closed for past year returns.  Online TurboTax can only be used for a 2022 return now.

So just abandon the account that you started that return in.  Start over using the desktop software that you will need to use to prepare a past year return.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2019 and 2020 and 2021 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

 If you need to prepare a return for 2019, 2020 or 2021 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If the tax return was filed and accepted then the only way to change the tax return is to amend it.  Before amending you should wait for the return to be processed so that the refund has been received or the taxes owed have been paid.

If the tax return has Not been filed then you can change the return using the TurboTax desktop editions for prior years.  You will need the tax data file for the year that needs to be changed and open the file using the TurboTax software for that year.  Prior year tax returns can only be printed and mailed using TurboTax, they cannot be e-filed.
