How to finish a return you started online
You will first need to download the tax data file from Online. It will end in .tax2018, .tax2019, .tax2020 etc. You can download the tax file for free. Then you need to install the Desktop program.
After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return .tax file is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - NEW).
You get one free state program in the Desktop program. To do another state you will have to buy the new state program.
Hi, I had seen that tip online, but when I signed in to Turbotax, I was not able to see the any of my files. Only the questionnaire to start a new return online. There did not seem to be a way to get around that to find my 2020 .tax return file.
I finally got around it and have learned that my 2020 file is missing. I have found my other files, but now see that my 2019 file is missing as well. Luckily I had actually completed and filed 2019 and downloaded/saved all of my files, including the .tax file and confirmations from Turbotax that my return was accepted by the IRS. So ALL is not lost. Hopefully, 2020 is only hidden because I had not yet paid for it when I filed the extension, which was the last time I was in the website.
I was disconnected on the first try and then ran out of time to contact Intuit today, so I'll try again tomorrow. Thank you for your response to my question!
It's common to end up with multiple accounts. First LOG OUT of whatever TurboTax account you're logged into right now. Then use this TurboTax account recovery website to get a list of user ID's for an email address. Run the tool against any email addresses you may have used

If you used the Desktop CD/Download program then the only copy is on your computer and not saved or stored online.
You can also request a transcript from the IRS
