Hello, last year when I filed my taxes i put in the wrong state when filing. I accidentally filed my taxes under Hawaii instead of New Jersey. What do I do?

Here's what you can do to correct this:

  1. File an Amended Return: Use Form 1040-X to amend your federal return and the respective state forms for Hawaii and New Jersey
  2. Hawaii: File a non-resident Hawaii tax return showing zero Hawaii income to get a refund of any incorrectly withheld taxes
  3. New Jersey: File a New Jersey resident tax return to report your correct income and pay any taxes due

If you used TurboTax, you can follow this link to amend your return. If you didn't use TurboTax, you can purchase a prior year product to amend your return here.
