The TurboTax updates have automatically excluded the unemployment income per the American Rescue Plan. Therefore you will first need to re-include the income to get back to the original tax return filed.
You have so many gaps in your instructions I am lost, the options you describe are not what I’m seeing
@Sky3129 The LA return looks just like the original and does not have a separate column for the original amounts as most states and the federal do. Simply click amend on your state and let it produce the form for you. Compare it to your original form and make sure the taxable income is lowered by up to $10,200 for the exempt unemployment.
If your unemployment was less than $10,200, the adjustment would be the lowered amount.
The LA form will also have the x mark for amended in the top section of the return, on the left side.
It must be mailed in. You should mail it with tracking to ensure its safe arrival of your information.
The LA in the program was corrected with the updated software. If necessary, you can just print the LA form, mark the amend box and mail it. As long as the taxable income is correctly reduced from the original.
Ok so I think I did it right and for the amended return reason I just put Unemployment with no other boxes filled. Do I maill the whole return? I’m unsure what to mail.
I also owe taxes and had a future payment scheduled, will that future payment be cancelled since I’m amending and will have to mail in a check because I still owe state taxes?
@Sky3129 Sounds good.
If you scheduled a payment, the state will take it. If the state will owe you a refund once they receive your amended form, then you can mail the amend and wait for a refund.
If you owe additional money above what they will be taking, then you should make a payment of the additional amount. The LA deadline is June 17 so no rush to pay.
You may be able to get through to the state department and get the withdrawal cancelled but I don't have much faith in it. Contact LA here.
I owed $369 previously with the ammended return it says I owe $9 so I assume I should get $360 back.
in regards to the amended return, my amended return that printed is 18 pages. I mail all that to amend my state return or is the federal return included in it? I’m not sure how to tell the difference.
Your federal amended return is a form 1040-X and may include schedules 1 to 3, as well as other forms and schedules.
The Louisiana amended return is form IT-540.
When the forms print out, the federal forms are typically printed first, followed by the state forms. So, the forms behind the form 1040-X will be the federal forms, until you come to the state form IT-540, behind which you will typically find the state forms.
