Has anyone not received their unemployment refund yet? I don't understand why mine is taking so long.

It's now Jan15th 2022 and my son still hasn't received his refund. I filed taxes for my daughter and son in the beginning of March and both owed due to unemployment they received (as dependents they got taxed at my tax bracket and owed). My daughter got her refund in Nov, but my son still hasn't received anything. We have checked his transcripts several times and it still hasn't changed. However, TT is now shows he received a refund as it recalculated based on the new exclusion. I'm not confident that he is going to receive his refund automatically at this point since we are now into 2022. I don't want this to mess up what TT imports into his 2021 taxes if they aren't going to send his refund (which should be around $3K as he paid in $2,300). Should I file an amendment at this point? According to articles I've read, it looks like the IRS is done with the simple returns and he's should have been in that category. I have been all over the IRS website, but there aren't any recent updates. The latest thing I could find was that a round would be send at the end of December, but his transcripts still don't show that he was included in that).

Actually the IRS is still working on some of those "extra" refunds for people who paid federal tax on all of their unemployment before the tax law changed, so you should keep waiting.   The IRS does not want you to amend for that.

You will get an additional federal income tax refund for the unemployment exclusion if all of the following are true.

  • You reported unemployment benefits as income on your 2020 tax return, on Schedule 1 line 7.
  • You did not get the unemployment exclusion on the 2020 tax return that you filed. The unemployment exclusion would appear as a negative amount on Schedule 1 line 8, with the abbreviation UCE on the dotted line to the left of the amount.
  • Your tax on Form 1040 line 16 is not zero.
  • Your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), not including unemployment, is less than $150,000.
