Filing and stimulus question

I filed my federal taxes on taxact the other day and one of tge questions was regarding if I received the $1400 stimulus in 2021. The way they worded it, it seemed like I should have received another 1400 so I stupidly said no to the question. This in fact made my refund 1400 more. Shortly after, I realized that they meant the 1400 that I did receive and now will receive again because of this mistake on my part. How do I return the money to the irs once I receive it and will they penalize me? Thank You!

No----your mistake will not get you another $1400.   But if your e-file is accepted, the IRS  cross checks for those stimulus payments.  They know you got the $1400 and they will remove it from your refund.  Expect that to delay your refund for awhile.   If your e-file is rejected you can fix it and re-file.   if the IRS accepts your e-file then you will just have a longer wait.
