I need to amend a tax return for 2018 for my in-laws that was completed and filed outside of TurboTax. When auditing the entries for 2018, I noticed that the person that prepared the tax form and submitted the taxes made errors. When entering the tax information for 2018 into TurboTax, it reflects a surplus amount of taxes overpaid of $487.00 but when they filed through another tax preparer, they owed and were required to pay $1,523.00. Using the same information the preparer used, I reflect the $487.00 and cannot determine where the error occurred. If I'm correct, my in-laws should receive $2010.00 from the Federal Government through an amended tax return. I've narrowed it down to the IRA and Pension information that was recorded by the preparer; it appears they entered something incorrectly because the total figures don't match for AGI.
My question is: How do I file the amendment through TurboTax?
Thanks,
Dale Griffith

Ideally you should go back to who did it and they should amend it for free if it was their error. To amend a return you did somewhere else, you would first have to fill out Turbo Tax like you are doing the original return and pay for it. You have to recreate the actual wrong original return. Then when it matches each line that you really filed you have to tell Turbo Tax you will mail it so it thinks it was filed. Then you can amend it.
Do you have the 2018 Desktop program?
For prior years you have to buy the Desktop program. You can only buy the download for prior years. You have to buy a separate program for each year. They only sell the last 3 years. You need a full Windows or Mac computer to install it on. Buy the download here

You can recreate the original return using the Forms Mode. Then say to mail it. How to amend a Desktop return,
I can't duplicate the error the preparer made last year. When I enter what should have been put into the tax return for 2018, I reflect the error, but cannot narrow down where they made their error other than they made a calculation error when adding up pensions.
That's why you should use the Desktop program. Then you can make overrides on the actual forms to match the wrong entries.
