Last night our Married Filed Jointly return was accepted electronically by IRS and Ohio. We owed almost $4000 between both of these returns. We entered our direct payment information which will be deducted May 16th.
Afterwards, we realized we should have tried to file MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY so we tried that today and it reduced our tax liability by half.
Questions:
The original return was e-filed and is now amended in just my husband's name; and he is due a refund. But my return owes money which I haven't yet e-filed because I'm afraid we'll both get a big withdrawal from our account and am panicked!!
How do I handle this and know that his amended return gets the refund while mine pays??

Married filing joint is almost always the best option however, you can amend if done before the original filing deadline.
You can amend a return to change from married filling separate to married filing joint but not from married filing joint to married filing separate unless you do so prior to the original filling deadline without extensions.
