EIN not accepted from W-2

I have entered my EIN over and over again and turbo tax still says I need to go back and enter it. I have tried it with the dash, without the dash. I have redone the whole section and instead of importing my W-2 I amnually entered it. Still saying that I need to enter my EIN! I contacted HR at my job and they confirmed that the EIN is correct.

If by chance this is a new employer or a new EIN for the employer I have seen this happen at the IRS level as a rejection.  In this situation you would have to mail your tax return.

 

If you have not been able to reach the stage of actually e-filing your return read the next steps. First clear the entry by placing your cursor there, then using the delete key until the entire number is gone (or highlight and click delete). 

 

Next, clear your cache and cookies. It handles many issues that seem nonsensical on a regular basis. 

  • Close your TurboTax return first.

Watch to be sure you are selecting 'all time' as example.  Do not use selections like 'last hour' for those browsers that give  you options.

Once this is complete open your return and select to enter your income. 

  1. Select Federal in the left menu and then Wages & Income, OR 
  2. Search (upper right) type w2 > Jump to... link
  3. Type in the EIN - numbers only  (do not enter the dash because it's automatic)

Thank you for your suggestions. I did everything you said. I cleared my cache, went back in and put the EIN again and it still reports 1 error. The company is not new and no one has complained about the 

EIN not being accepted.  :(

One additional thought trying to help this experience.  Let's make sure you have the correct EIN entry.  The EIN is nine digits and no letters at all and you already know no dash entry is required. 

 

If you are confident with that, and you continue to get the error you can do two things.

  1. Mail your tax return instead of using e-file.  It will take more time if you have a refund, but direct deposit will speed it up a little.
  2. Contact TurboTax assistance. What is the TurboTax phone number?

Thank you! I am still getting the same error message. I have checked with HR and confirmed that it is the correct EIN. They are not a new company so I just don't know what the issue is.  The program lets me continue so I think I will just move forward and hope for the best! Thank you again for your feedback and guidance. 🙂
