Economic stimulus for an adult claimed as a dependant

An adult friend claimed me on his taxes for 2019 as a dependent.  Per the IRS website, the IRS will automatically calculate a stimulus payment for me in the refund.  My adult friend got his income tax but there was no automatic calculated amount for me.  I got nothing.  What should i do?

Economic stimulus for an adult claimed as a dependant

Parents get $500 stimulus money for a child under the age of 17.  YOU do not get anything if you are claimed as a dependent.

And you may be confused about the difference between stimulus money and an income tax refund.  Those are two different and separate things.  If you were claimed as a dependent by a "friend" he might get a $500 credit on his own tax return to reduce the tax he owed----but if you are not related to him and did not live with him for the whole year, claiming you was illegal.

Okay but my question is very specific... I am the adult friend who claimed Mr. Rooker as a dependent.  He is not a relative and he is very much an adult.  However, he lived with me all of last year.  Where is Mr. Rooker's stimulus money?  IRS says that they will automatically calculate the stimulus amount for Mr. Rooker.  What is that amount and where is it?

Sorry -- you misunderstood.  You do not get stimulus money for claiming an adult dependent, nor does the person you claimed get it.  The only stimulus money you get is the money for yourself or for a spouse if you filed a joint return, or for a child under the age of 17.  No money for claiming an adult.  And a person who has been claimed as a dependent does not receive a stimulus check at all.

Oh that's totally not fair...    the adult dependent still has to eat.  He doesn't live with me now.  He is suffering through the pandemic.  He's not entitled to stimulus money this year...based on his activities last year that had nothing to do with covid-19?  Some program.... no wonder people are still in distress... i hate this.

and once again you ignored my question... The IRS stated that they will "automatically calculate an amount for the adult dependent's stimulus"  how much was calculated and where is it?

Your question is not being ignored.  But you misunderstand how the stimulus payments work.

Please include a screen shot of where you saw that the IRS  "will automatically calculate an amount for the adult dependent's stimulus"

Did you read the link directly from the IRS that was provided to you that clearly tells you that dependents do not get stimulus money?   Read the part about who is not eligible for stimulus money.

A2. Although some filers, such as high-income filers, will not qualify for an Economic Impact Payment, most will.

Taxpayers likely won't qualify for an Economic Impact Payment if any of the following apply:

  • Your adjusted gross income is greater than
    • $99,000 if your filing status was single or married filing separately
    • $136,500 for head of household
    • $198,000 if your filing status was married filing jointly
  • You can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return. For example, this would include a child, student or older dependent who can be claimed on a parent’s return.
  • You do not have a valid Social Security number.
  • You are a nonresident alien.
  • You filed Form 1040-NR or Form 1040NR-EZ, Form 1040-PR or Form 1040-SS for 2019.

And from a TurboTax FAQ:

Are dependents over the age of 17 eligible for the additional $500 stimulus payment? Will they recei...

No. Only qualifying child dependents under 17 are eligible for the additional $500 stimulus payment. Adult dependents also cannot receive their own stimulus payment as they are claimed on your return.

Okay i think i get it.  It says that if you could be claimed as a dependent, then you are not eligible.  In other words, if you lived under somebody else's roof for the entire year on last year and made no money and they are able to claim you as a dependent, then you won't be eligible for the Economic Stimulus.

But in 2021, I can't claim my adult friend as a dependent because he's not living with me the entire year...then he may be eligible for the stimulus?  Will there be another stimulus in 2021?

So under the rules you sent me .... my return is not a parent's return... it's a friends return... does that make my adult friend eligible since my return is NOT a parent's return as the rule states?

Economic stimulus for an adult claimed as a dependant

No.   It does not matter if your friend was claimed by a parent or by you.  If he was claimed as SOMEONE's dependent, he does not qualify to receive a stimulus check.  Sorry--that is the way Congress wrote the law.

Oh I get it.  I am not wanting to fight with the law.  It was the example that they gave.  When you want someone to understand that a "dependent" though it may sound like a child to even the most savvy that for tax purposes it means "whether you lived with one person, any person under these tax laws, for the entire taxable year then they can claim you as a dependent, then the last examples you'd want to use, is the only three examples and each one involve's only a parent's return.  Well, had they given a non-parental example in place of one of those three, then not only would we be sure that this clause includes us, but we'd also have a name for it.  Non-parental dependency?  I don't know.
