E-File was rejected because of "duplicate" 1099-R forms.

This problem still exists!  I have filed with 2 IRA accounts with the exact same amounts and data in the 1099-R for years with no problem. Suddenly this year - 2022 - I get rejected for duplicate forms.  Can TurboTax please respond about this problem?

Subtract $0.01 from one form and add $0.01 to the other form and then e-file again.

Yes -- I have the problem too. Very disheartening that TurboTax has had a year to fix it and hasn't.  Makes me wonder about the veracity of the rest of the program.  I'm trusting it to give me accurate information, I hope my trust isn't misplaced.

Rejected agin today, so the problem is not fixed! Employed the $.01 up and down and resubmitted for the 4th time. TurboTax, I want a refund and free audit protection!

I have filed three times now and continue to get rejected for "duplicate 1099-R".     I have a total of four 1099-R's, with two coming from the same broker (IRA custodian).  The distributions are from different funds of .the same IRA account.  The distributions are identical.  The funds have different names, which are in the "Payee" box, but I still get rejected for "duplicate 1099-R".    Frustrated.  This did not happen for 2021 or 2020.   Is the ".01" adjustment the only way to get the returns accepted?    How can I get a hold of  TT rep?

4th submission rejected within 20 minutes after trying the $.01 gambit. Will try again with a $1.00 difference... TurboTax is creating serious problems for me, after working well for over 20 years!

OK, 4th rejection, but this time got a real error, a misentered TIN#... resumed without any other changes... fingers crossed...

Success!! The 1 cent switch must have allowed error-checking to proceed to the next level. I own that next mistake, but TT needs to take care of anyone who gets audited after juggling that penny!!!

TurboTax, you have wasted hours of my time for what is YOUR error!  My return was rejected twice with the same message and suggestion that I mail my returns (not helpful!).  I added a penny to one of the two 1099-R forms -- both Federal and State were accepted within an hour!  (Comfortable that since it rounds to the same dollar amount the audit risk is not an issue.)

I have two 1099-R forms from the same payer (for the same amounts) because I turned 59 1/2 in the middle of the year and the forms have two different codes in Box 7.  The IRS knows this so why can't TT scan more than the Payer and the Distribution Box?  Seems like a lot of people are having issues with this and there are many good reasons someone might file multiple 1099-R forms!

I re-filed my return - adding  $1 to one 1099-R and subtracting a $1 from the other 1099-R.     Was accepted within 20 minutes!

TT needs to look at what is going on here.  This is way more time than I wanted to spend on this.  And if the IRS should come calling about those $1 adjustments, I have all my documentation and emails .

I have the same issue.  Spoke with TurboTax 3 times and didn’t find anything to change.  Has been rejected three times so far.

Thank you for sharing this information. We will look into this rejection message of duplicated 1099-R forms when they are actually different.

In the meantime, as a possible workaround, if you add one penny to one of the 1099-R forms, they will have different amounts and should bypass the message.

Because cents are rounded to the nearest dollar, this will not have an effect on the amounts in your return unless it is 49 cents to 50 cents. In this case, subtract one penny from one of the 1099-R forms.

Please let us know if this does not resolve the issue and it is still rejected with this message.

I just added $0.01 to one of the 1099s and that was accepted!

Software should flag this issue prior to transmitting (e-file), and have a way to review and accept as is - by the filer! It's filer's responsibility to ensure it's correct and IRS will match up anyway with what 1099 issuer submitted.

These 2 1099s have different Account numbers in the form when I look at all the detail, so they should never have been flagged as duplicates to begin with.

I had the same problem after having no problem last year even though my wife and I had the same amounts on 1099-R forms.  After trying a few things I added .01 to my 1099-R amount.  Hopefully this will take care of it.  It is either a Turbo Tax or IRS issue that needs fixed as the government wants us to use efiling.   In the furure we will not withdraw the exact same amounts from our IRA or Roth IRA accounts.  We shouldn't have to "game" the system to get efiling to work.

I am having the same problem with the 2021 return. The 1099-Rs are not duplicate contrary to what Turbo Tax said/rejected. Any suggestions - other than mailing in the return?

@pat651 It may be that one of your withholding amounts are duplicated. If so, you could change one by one dollar and it wouldn't affect your tax so probably would not create a problem. It just might result in your refund being adjusted by one dollar.
