Do I need to file an amended return?

We filed MFJ return.   We reported that my wife would contribute $4,200 to her HSA.  We are covered under a Family HSA eligible medical plan.   When my wife went to contribute, we were informed by the "custodian" that the HSA account was set up as a single.   So my wife contributed $3600 to her HSA and I opened up my own HSA account and contributed $600.      In looking over the tax forms, I noticed that if we were to file an amended return, there would be no changes to 1040 or Schedule 1.  The only thing that would change would be the details on the Form 8889.     There is no change to AGI, or Taxable Income.

Do I need to file an amended return?

Yes, you should amend your tax return, but wait until the IRS has completely processed your original return.  Tax reporting is required if you have a Health Savings Account (HSA). You will be required to complete IRS Form 8889.  The amounts on the 8889 will be used as the basis for 1099-SA claims.
