Desktop 2025 deleted .tax files before state return rejected.

Completed filling out taxes and transmitted federal and NY state on 02/01/2026 on borrowed computer. Received email 6 days later from TurboTax that state was rejected but all software was deleted from borrowed computer with no files saved. Reinstalled software on my computer, redid taxes and tried to submit but got notice taxes already transmitted, which they were. How do I fix NY state taxes? Thanks.

If you deleted the .tax file you can check their trash to see if you emptied it yet or not. If you did not you can restore it from your trash or recycle bin.

If not, you will need to recreate your return using a pdf that you should have printed.

If your federal return was accepted and you are trying to submit your state from a different tax file, you will need to print and mail your return. The state needs to have a federal attached to it that has been electronically submitted in order to e-file the state. You will not be able to submit the state electronically with a recreated file.

Thank you for the fast response. Unfortunately the recycle bin was emptied. Also unfortunately, New York State does not accept mail in returns. With respect- any other suggestions? Would it be possible to refile with a different software company's federal and state return? From what I understand the federal return would instantly be rejected as it has already been accepted. Would the rejection of the federal return bounce the NY state return also? Thanks again.

Yes, your federal return will be rejected which could eliminate your New York State (NYS) return from being e-filed. You can mail NYS returns in certain circumstances. The link below will let you find the correct address based on refund, or a payment.
