Last year, I was not able to claim my son as a depeIndent, but this year that changed. However, I did not click that someone (parents in this case) could claim him as a dependent. I submitted his tax return, it was processed by IRS and he has already received his tax check. Now when I try to e-file my return, it was rejected because it detected that I claimed my son as a dependent. Turboxtax response was to either delete my son from my return or mail my return with my son claimed as a dependent.
My question...Turbixtax let me amend my son's return and click that he can be claimed as a dependent. It recalculated the federal and state tax returns that he now owes. If I submit this amended return, can I now efile my return claiming him as a dependent OR...do I still have to mail my return? If I have to mail my returns,,,,why if my son amended his return.
Can someone please help answer this question. I could not get an answer from IRS.
Thank you

You still have to mail in your own tax return in order to claim your son. His amended return will take months to be processed. No need for you to wait for that--it is unlikely to "catch up" in the system any time in 2020. Print, sign and mail yours.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
An amended return can take up to 16 weeks to be processed. Until that gets processed your return will still get rejected (& even after the IRS may not cleared their system of the rejection). Your best bet is to also mail in your return (separate envelopes), I would suggest mailing them with a request to track the mail so you know when they have been received.
To add:
Three weeks after mailing your amended return, you can start tracking it at the IRS Where's My Amended Return? tracking tool. Please allow at least 16 weeks for the IRS to process your amended return.
Processing times for amended state returns vary from state to state. If it's been more than 12 weeks since you mailed your amended state return, and you haven't heard anything, we suggest you contact your state tax agency.
@doug-trimboli We did answer your question. You will not be able to e-file because of the rejection. TurboTax is not rejecting your return, the IRS is.
Unfortunately, now you cannot e-file a State return until your Federal return gets accepted. Since a mailed in your does not get an acceptance notice, you would also have to mail in your State return. The TurboTax state program is designed to transfer information from your federal return. For this reason, TurboTax state isn't sold as a standalone tax-preparation product.

thank you fr the quick response, but that is not the question that I need answered. The question is if I submit my son's amended return, will turbotax now allow me to efil my return and not reject it as it is doing now.

thank you. Your response makes sense. I will print off and mail my returns based on your response. Turbotax response did say that I could e-file my state. Does that sound correct?

I just need to delete my child off my 2020 taxes, IRS is no help and don't seems like TurboTax is not helping me either. I have been waiting on a phone call back, I have not received any response yet.
Are you talking about a 2019 return that you filed in 2020?
If you are trying to change/delete a dependent that was on your 2019 return the only way to do that is by amending the 2019 return. If you are trying to do that for stimulus money reasons it is a waste of time. You can use the recovery rebate credit on a 2020 return to reconcile any problems with the stimulus money.
Select your tax year for amending instructions:
What does it mean to "amend" a return?
· Do I Need to Amend my Tax Return?
If you are talking about removing a dependent from a 2020 return that you just e-filed, you cannot do that at this time. Your return cannot be changed while it is in pending. The IRS will not begin to accept 2020 returns until February 12.
