If you have already filed the 2019 tax return -

You will have to cancel the payment and then pay the federal taxes owed on the IRS payment website on or before July 15, 2020.

IRS website for information on canceling a direct debit payment -https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-taxes-by-electronic-funds-withdrawal

  • Once your return is accepted, information pertaining to your payment, such as account information, payment date, or amount, cannot be changed. If changes are needed, the only option is to cancel the payment and choose another payment method.
  • Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
  • Cancellation requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.

Go to this IRS payment website and choose Direct Pay - https://www.irs.gov/payments

If you have Not yet filed your 2019 tax return -

The extension to pay the taxes owed is automatic if you have 2019 federal taxes owed.  The taxes owed do not have to be paid until July 15, 2020

However, you still must file your 2019 tax return on or before April 15, 2020 to avoid the failure to file penalties.

When filing your 2019 tax return select the option to pay the 2019 tax with a check.  Then continue and e-file your tax return.

Then on or before July 15, 2020 go to the IRS payment website and use Direct Pay to the pay the taxes owed - https://www.irs.gov/payments

Why is TurboTax unable to update your software to support the new tax due date of July 17, 2020?  Your are not supporting Americans, your customers during a time of crisis but adding to the burden by forcing us to inundate the US Government IRS to only move out our payment due dates which three months is critical for most of your customers.  You as a US company need to step up during this critical time and quickly update your software if you want to keep me and millions others a customers.  Look forward to a thoughtful response from you or your Intuit Leadership.

It takes time to change the software to include the new dates for all of the desktop and online editions.  This was just announced three days ago so a little patience is required.  TurboTax will have the dates changed as soon as possible.

@DoninGA

In regard to your comment to those who have NOT yet filed a 2019 tax return and have Federal taxes owed.

Where did you read that "you must file your 2019 return on or before April 15, 2020 to avoid the failure to file penalties" ? I'm specifically referring to your claim in regard to deferring taxes. You are making the claim that if you haven't filed your 2019 return yet and choose to defer taxes owed until July 15th, you must file by April 15th.

Include the exact page in an attached link to support where you read this on IRS.gov  ! !

That answer from two weeks ago was based on information valid at that time.  This is no longer the case.

Both the filing of a federal tax return and the payment of federal taxes owed can be filed or paid on or before July 15, 2020 without penalty.

@DoninGA

I had to challenge that because I could not find that anywhere on IRS.gov
