Change a non filer status

Hello,

last year, I submitted a nonfiler through the IRS website by myself. For filling status, there were only two options- single or joint. At that time, my husband was not in the USA. So, I just filed as a single showing my daughter as a dependent. Is there any way I can change the filling status? I need it for my son to get financial aid in his college. They want us to amend it to married but filed separately or joint. How can I do that?

Sign in to your account.  Amend your return and change the filing status.  Then submit the amend.

We need more information.    Please provide more details.   By "last year"   do you mean you used the IRS non-filer tool in 2020?    It sounds like you do not have/did not use a TurboTax account if you used the IRS non-filer site to file for---what?--- a stimulus payment?   And you claimed only your daughter on the IRS site?    (Which makes sense if your son was older than 16 since you could not get EIP payments for a child older than 16).

Exactly when did you use that IRS non-filer site?

You say your spouse was not in the U.S. "at the time"---- is he now in the U.S.?   Does your spouse  have a Social Security number or an ITIN?   Does your son have a Social Security number or ITIN?

1) yes, I mean 2020

2) yes, I did it for the stimulus payment

3) yes, only I claimed only my daughter as my son is over 18

4) I am not very sure, but it was around June maybe, when I used the IRS website to fill the nonfiler

5) no, he is not in the US now. But both my husband and my son have social security number.

@Dil1

Did you need to file a 2020 return ?   Did you have any income at all ?   If so amending a 2020 non filer return  to change filing statuses will not do anything and the IRS will not even accept the return.

If the school wants you to switch filing status to MFS  then go ahead and hand one in if needed ... the IRS will not care and they will ignore the amended return.

HOWEVER ... if you or your spouse has income you MUST amend the return to report the income and correct the filing status ... the non filer portal was ONLY for people who did not need to file a real return.
