@kentarourata And...we keep telling you that you cannot e-file a 2019 return. You have to print, sign and mail a 2019 return.
Right. I've printed mine and my business has been taken care of. I was just trying to answer questions being asked... Appreciate the help from the community!
When you mail it---use a mailing service like certified mail that will track it so you will know the IRS received it because it is taking months for the IRS to process mailed returns. You do not want to spend the next six or more months wondering if the IRS even received the envelope.
I just e-filed my amended 2020 returns, but turbotax wouldn't let me e-file my amended 2019 returns. So the fact that they don't process e-filing for amendments is not correct, but I'm extremely disappointed that the 2019 is not working, and for no reason other than an internal turbotax issue apparently. Other software IS doing it.
@ddunkley2 No---you cannot e-file an amended 2019 return. Some paid tax professionals can do that, but from TurboTax you can only e-file an amended 2020 return at this time. Your 2019 return has to be printed, signed and mailed.
I have the same exact question. The IRS allows 2019 1040X e-filing, but TurboTax does not support it. What is the reason?
E-filing from TurboTax is permanently closed for 2019 and 2020 returns. Some tax professionals have software that can still e-file for you, but it cannot be done using TurboTax now. The only way to file it from TT now is to print, sign and mail it.
Doesn't answer the "why" question.
Given that the extended deadline for filing 2020 returns was just a month ago, it seems strange that they have already shut down amended return e-filings. I guess once they have your money they are no longer interested in actually supporting their customers. My 2019 paper amended return (necessitated by a TurboTax bug in the first place) submitted in June still hasn't been processed and I am continuing to wait for my $900. Time to research other tax software providers. Tax year 2021 might be the year when I am finally going to make the switch...
@TGTaxfiler Just so you know----on November 20 the IRS will be closing down ALL e-filing to get ready for the new tax season.
When you mail your 1040X use a mailing service that will track it so you will know the IRS received it, or you may be wondering for a long time.
Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return. During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns. Do not expect quick results from amending. When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check. They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns. You can watch for information here:
https://www.irs.gov/Filing/Individuals/Amended-Returns-(Form-1040-X)/Wheres-My-Amended-Return-1
The pandemic should be a motivation for the IRS and tax software providers to encourage e-Filing instead of filling more containers with paper returns that IRS employees have to physically handle and process in an office.
And yes, I did mail it with USPS return receipt. Postcard confirming receipt is sitting here on my desk as a daily reminder of how Intuit and the IRS haven't realized yet that it's the 21st century... :(
IRS now allows e-Filing of Form 1040-X (for the current tax season).
How's that for 21st Century !!
You can't e-File after the e-File window closes.
All this should inform you - don't file an incorrect tax return.
IRS employs special contractors to fabricate replacement parts for their computers that are manufacturer discontinued. Fortunately, software doesn't wear out.
Same exact problem!
@lsenauke Not sure what your "same exact problem" is since there are multiple posts in this thread. But if the problem is that you want to e-file an amended return for a previous year, you cannot do that now. Only professional tax preparers who have the right professional tax software can e-file an earlier year return. You cannot e-file any earlier year return---original or amended--- from TurboTax. It has to be printed, signed and mailed.
I can’t efile my 2020 amended return turbo tax says you can do this but having no luck they said maybe on March 26 it’s frustrating that they no nothing about anything
@Miketoyota Your 2020 amended return cannot be e-filed. It has to be printed, signed and mailed. Only a 2021 amended return can be e-filed later in the season.
Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
