Can i file my 2016 tax return online

No.  Preparation and e-filing for 2016 is permanently closed.  The system is gearing up for 2017 returns.  You need to print, sign and mail the 2016 return; make sure to include any documents that show tax withheld such as W-2's and 1099's.

If you already paid for online software and started your 2016 return, contact customer support for a download of the desktop software which you will need to use to finish preparing your 2016 return, since the online software is unavailable now.

They are available Monday-Friday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time.

If you have not paid for the online software you will need to purchase and download desktop software:

If you need to prepare a return for 2014, 2015, or 2016 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

You can download the Forms and Instructions from the IRS web site:

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.
