I am trying to AMEND my 2019 return to add income (and taxes on that income). When I follow the directions, which include going into the program and SEARCHING on AMEND, I go in a circle that brings me back to the instructions I found.
I have my original return. I have that return duplicated with the changes needed, but I don't know how to get it to subtract out what I have already paid. If I start a new return, it asks me for all the information that is already in the return I filed (W2, name, etc.). I should not have to put in all the info again. Please advise. Thanks!

Once you have saved a copy of the original return start the amendment process and make the required changes ... if you have already paid the original balance due then it should be on line 16 ...
Amend FAQ:
Look at the form 1040X by switching to the forms mode …
Column A should have the figures from the original return, Column C the corrected figures and Column B the differences between the other 2 which needs an explanation on page 2 of the form 1040X.
If you completed it correctly you will see an entry on either line 16 OR 18:
On line 16 should be the amount you paid with your original return.
On line 18 should be the amount of your original refund you received.
Then you will see your extra refund on line 22 OR the new balance due you need to pay on line 20.
Hi,
Those are the instructions I am using. The problem comes with
"You should now be working inside the copy you'll be amending. Inside your program, search for amend and then click the Jump to link."
I can't JUMP to AMEND using that method. Unless there are two searches?? I am clicking on the search icon in the menu bar. That isn't helping.
When I'm in the duplicated return, HOW do I "start the amendment process"? Thanks!!
I have duplicated the original return. Do I have to start a new one? If I do, how do I import the data from the original return I am amending? When I start an AMENDED return, it asks for all the data, from W-2, names, address, etc. Turbotax must have done better than that. It must import data from the original return somehow.
Can I change my duplicated return into an Amended return? If so, which is the switch? How can I find it? Please do not say "Search on 'amend'" as that doesn't work. Thanks so much for your help.
The duplicate file is to preserve the original return as filed ... open the return from the home screen (you should see the tile on the home screen) then follow the instructions to amend the filed return. You do not need to start over. Click on OTHER TAX SITUATIONS and scroll down to AMEND then follow the onscreen instructions.
